‘SEMPER FI’ PORTERVILLE AIR FAIRE SALUTES 100 YEARS OF MARINE CORPS AVIATION
The 2012 Porterville Air Faire returns on Saturday, June 9, with a salute to the U. S. Marine Corps’ 100 year anniversary. This year marks the fifth anniversary of the renewal of this legendary event at the Porterville Municipal Airport, 1893 S. Newcomb Avenue in Porterville, with a new title but the same hometown atmosphere that has brought back attendees year after year.
This fun-filled week-end kicks off on Friday, June 8, with a sunset skydive by the “Just in Time” team. A deep pit BBQ dinner prepared and served by Mike Quatacker and Steve Huth and the Porterville Air Faire Committee, provides an opportunity to visit with performers of this year’s event. Dancing to country band “Bloodline” follows dinner, and the Porterville Eagles Club will be on hand with full beverage service. This $15 per person evening includes a hot air balloon glow, the Rollin’ Relics Classic Car display, and a P-51 Mustang photo shoot opportunity. Tethered balloon rides will also be available if the winds behave.
Show day festivities kick off at dawn with a balloon lift-off (winds permitting) and a pancake breakfast put on by the Porterville Exchange Club beginning at 7:00 a.m. Antique and classic planes, cars and motorcycles will be on display as well. Spot landing and flour bombing contest will add to the morning festivities. There will be a Kids’ Zone set up in the park as well as a generous amount of food, beverage (including Beer Garden), variety, T-shirt and crafts vendors on the grounds to keep visitors busy until show time.
The Air Show begins at 11:30 with the Parade of Heroes followed by a motorcycle honor-guard, and the “Just in Time” skydive team will parachute in with the American flag during the singing of our National Anthem by a Monache High School student. The San Joaquin Valley Marine Corps League Honor Guard will present the colors, fold the flag and exit the runway escorted by the “Patriot Guard” Motorcycle Team. This is a very moving ceremony—one you won’t want to miss!
Air Show performers for this year are John Collver and his North American AT6 representing the U. S. Marine Corps aviation celebration, Eddie Andreini in his Super Stearman and, for the first time in Porterville, flying his P-51 WW II Mustang. Also, the Red Star Yak formation team and Doug Jardine flying his Sbach 342 “Thunderbolt” will add to the thrilling show. The show closes with a repeat performance from the “Just in Time” skydiver team.
Gates open on Saturday, June 9, at 6:00 a.m. General Admission is $10. Seniors and Children ages 6-12 get in for $5. Children under 6 year are free.
