Tule River Parkway Tree Planting

August 2018- Several community groups came together on a warm Saturday morning to plant California native trees along the Tule River Parkway between Jaye Street and Main Street. Four native plant species were selected- Valley Oaks, California Sycamore, Fresno Ash, and Western Redbud- because they provide wildlife habitat and once established need minimal to no irrigation.

The Porterville Noon Rotary and Tule River Parkway Association coordinated Saturday’s tree planting project. Other partners included the Porterville Unified School District Pathways students from Harmony Magnet Academy, Granite Hills, and Porterville High School.

Eagle Scount Project

March 2018-  A recent Eagle Scout project, spearheaded by Ryan Mulvaney of Boy Scout Troop 139, consisted of planting rose bushes, spreading bark and replacing some benches at Zalud Park.  Thanks to Ryan for a job well done!

January 30, 2018- A new pet waste station went in at Veterans Park thanks to an awesome class project- thanks Mercadezz Clausen! She is a senior in the Environmental Health Sciences pathway at Monache High School.

November 2- Staff from Beneficial State Bank's Porterville Branch spent the morning planting 50 trees at the Porterville Sports Complex.  The future shade that will one day be provided by these trees will be enjoyed by thousands of visitors for many years to come.  Parks & Leisure Services greatly appreciated the $2,500 donation, as well as the volunteer effort to plant the trees.

October 26, 2017- Porterville College Men's Basketball Team, Head Coach Robert Haynes and Assistant Coach Gus Ramirez were on hand to give valuable pointers to our youth basketball coaches in preparation for our 2017-18 Youth Basketball League.  Porterville College is a great local resource and Parks & Leisure is truely thankful for a continued partnership.  PC hosts their home opener on Wednesday, November 15 at 6pm.

June, 2017- A speacial THANK YOU goes out to Coach Hill and the Porterville High School Baseball program, Coach Tree and the Strathmore High School Baseball program, and former Monache High School standout, Chris Steventon of the University of Nevada, Reno, for hosting the the Fundamentals of Baseball Clinic for the 2017 Junior Giants!  The Fundamentals of Baseball Clinic marks the first meeting of the season for the Junior Giants Baseball League, where all registered players recieve baseball instruction from local talent.  We are truely grateful for all of their time and commitment!

March, 2017- Pictured below is ‘Determined Mess’, a walking group led by Phillip Duncan.  They, along with members of Relay for Life and Porterville FYI, for a total of 14 and 1 dog, collected over a dozen bags of trash and several other items along the Tule River Parkway.  This is their fourth cleanup project in the last year.  Take your next walk on the Tule River Parkway trail and enjoy their efforts!
